Blackout materials are most commonly used in rooms that require darkness for special purposes. Blackout material is available in different forms like poster boards, blackout curtains, rubberized fabrics, self adhesive papers, black aluminum foils, masking tapes and black screens. Most commonly the materials are matte finished, such that they absorb the maximum amount of light falling on them. Back in the day, I used to do some home photo developing (before digital photography became commonplace). One of the big challenges was finding a way to keep things dark. I used heavy duty black landscaping plastic, but it was not the most practical solution. It also would not look very good if you wanted to black out an area of your home that needs to look good in the daylight.

The most popular rubberized fabrics are the most easy to apply. Using a pair of scissors, one can easily mark and cut out the required size. These carbon enriched materials ensure 100% light absorption and come fitted with Velcro strips or other hook arrangements. They can be easily attached to walls, window frames or door frames and can be dismantled easily. When not in use, the sheet can be neatly rolled and clipped. Poster boards are made out of dense foam layer placed between two layers of plastic coated black cardboard. Application of this material is where construction of light tight boxes is required. The tapes are implemented in packing the corners of these boxes. Black aluminum foils are the best suited for masking small light leaks and get rid of reflections. The material is flexible and lightweight, and is one of the easiest to apply. Aluminum screens are used to shield optical experiments from unwanted lights.

Leopard Skin and Black Padded Toilet Seat

There are many things to consider when redecorating a bathroom. You might be doing a total makeover, or just maybe changing the color. One thing most people don’t think about is their toilet seat. By adding something as simple as a padded toilet seat can give your bathroom a new look and feel.

I don’t care how much they try; hard cold plastic isn’t comfortable to sit on it. In the morning it’s cold and just not nice to sit on. By switching to a padded or soft toilet seat, you will experience new comfort. How many times have you gone to sit on that cold toilet and you get that chill? We all have, and you no longer have to.

Then simply place the new seat on the toilet. You might only need that screwdriver again or they might have hand tighten nuts installed on it. Either way it should only take you a few minutes to install your new padded toilet seat.

The leopard skin toilet seat shown above might be a bit much for some folks, but there are quite a few designs available to choose from if you have a creative streak that goes as far as the bathroom.  A few of the popular designs that might be hard to find locally are shown below.  They aren't all outrageous by any means.  There are seats with nautical themes, marble patterns made to match the surrounding fixtures, and many other great looks.  I suppose the Spunky Monkey seat might even go with a jungle theme or a bathroom filled with live plants.  I'm not sure what the March of the Penguins toilet seat or the Spongebob toilet seat would match, but they would probably help a resistant child to be a little bit more comfortable with learning to use the potty.

As the warm season approaches, it won't be long until many of us hear the sound of our central air conditioning unit kicking on for the first time in months. Soon afterwards, we'll expect to feel the first rush of cool air from the air conditioning vents and assume that all is well with our system. Well, not so fast! Have you been keeping up with the basic air conditioning maintenance required for your unit?

Not many air conditioning owners take the time or interest to prepare their units for the off-season, and those who don't probably don't give a thought to preparing their units for the cooling season. Either of these attitudes can prove to be a very costly mistake.

A relatively short amount of time and a little effort and expense can result in a huge savings, to say nothing of avoiding the misery of spending a day or several days in the blistering heat awaiting the arrival of the service technician. Why not plan to take care of this chore before disaster strikes? Depending on your circumstances and ability, you're likely to find at least some things you can do yourself .

If you were provided with an owner's manual for your air conditioning unit, this is the time to find it and peruse the section on owner maintenance. If you don't have such a manual, following you'll find some very basic, general tips on what to consider. Depending on your circumstances and desire, you'll find at least some maintenance items you can do yourself and leave the rest to a professional air conditioning maintenance contractor. Either way, don't leave the maintenance undone.

The simplest item of maintenance is to simply replace the filter. Most people realize that their furnace has a filter, but not so many are aware that filtering is perhaps even more critical to the operation of their air conditioning unit. Airborne contaminants of all descriptions are removed by the filter before they can be drawn through the evaporator or coils of the unit.

The evaporator coils are contained in a part that resembles a radiator, with many metal fins closely arranged. These fins dissipate the heat from the fluids being pushed through them. Their close spacing makes them an ideal location for the collection of airborne debris, and to the extent that you can preclude such stuff from reaching them, you will allow your air conditioning unit to function more efficiently.

You'll find that you need a particular size of filter to fit your unit. That much is not variable. However, you will also find that there is a range of filters that will remove more or less of the airborne contaminants that find their way to its surface. Generally, those that will operate more efficiently will cost somewhat more. You may have a filter that can be washed and re-used, in which case a thorough cleaning with a garden hose in the direction of the air flow will work wonders.

Another relatively simple chore that the homeowner can perform is to clean the condenser coil. This will be found outside in the housing for the compressor. This also can become clogged, and being located outdoors and not filtered, you may find leaves and other such stuff trapped there, not to mention just plain dirt. The bigger stuff you can pull out by hand. The finer stuff can be washed out with a garden hose. Some people think this would be a good project to employ their power washer. Be aware that the fins can be damaged and bent and doing so will result in a decrease in your air conditioning unit's efficiency. Better just to use the garden hose and maybe a brush to remove the mess.

These are the most basic and frequently needed items of air conditioner maintenance, and easily within the abilities of most people. Other maintenance items ought to be performed at least annually, and a trip from a technician is the best way to have them taken care of. Remember that deferred or neglected maintenance is likely to end up costing several thousand dollars for repair or replacement of failed units, so don't skimp on the maintenance.

Spike aerators are one type of lawn aerating tool.  With lawn aeration, thousands of tiny holes are poked into the lawn, allowing water, nutrients and air to make contact with grass roots.  This is one way to repair a floundering lawn.

Spike aerators use solid metal tines to poke holes in the lawn.  The other type of aerator is a plug aerator, in which hallow spoons actually remove a core or chunk of lawn.  In the spike aerator category, there are several types to choose from, but not all are created equal.

In order to get any success from spike aeration, you need a significant amount of weight to be exerted on the spikes.  Two types allow for this.  Hand and foot push spikes are designed to be pushed into the ground by the operator, ensuring that there is plenty of force to penetrate the ground.  These aerators are durable and affordable, however they are extremely time consuming and labor intensive.  For a more time-efficient method, you can use a rolling barrel spike aerator.  This type of aerator has a hollow core studded with spikes that penetrate the earth as it is pushed by hand.  You can add weight by filling the core with water or sand.  There is then enough weight to penetrate the surface.  The rolling barrel aerator covers a larger area in less time than does the hand and foot push aerator.

There are three other types of spike aerators, but none are particularly effective.  Lawn mower spikes cover very little area and are too shallow to be effective.  Shoe spikes are also too narrow, and push spikes are too light to penetrate.

The rolling barrel spike aerator and the hand and foot push spike aerator are both effective – picking the best one for you depends on your budget and time constraints.
