I grew up living next woods that were filled with old growth red oak trees and my Dad had a background in carpentry, so I used to hear a lot about the strength of oak and how it had been used for so long to build furniture.  I guess I was kind of dorky, but I used to walk through the woods and stare up at those trees in amazement.  It wasn't the sheer size and strength of them, it was also the fact that they were used to build so much of what we depended on every day.  Hey, I was seven or eight and we didn't have cable TV, OK?

When my wife and I started looking for bedroom furniture to put into our house after we got married, she specifically started looking for oak bedroom furniture.  I thought that was kind of neat for the reasons I just mentioned, but she just shook her head and seemed to resign herself to getting used to me as we browsed through furniture stores.

I've mentioned before that although I can appreciate contemporary furnishings, I really sort of prefer a simpler, even rustic look.  We started checking out some Amish furniture that was beautiful, but it was beyond our budget at the time.  The antique furniture we checked out was also a bit pricey, but in hindsight, we really should have gone and checked out some estate auctions to see if we could find something.  I've seen solid oak bedroom furniture go for very low prices at auctions.  I mentioned this in another post, but it bears repeating.  If you can get the furniture moved quickly, you can sometimes grab a great deal at auctions and if you go out looking for antique oak bedroom furniture in any other setting, you will probably run in to some people asking a hefty price for furniture that people were trying to get cleared out at an estate sale.

Oak Bedroom Furniture Characteristics

Oak furniture has been popular since man first realized its wonderful properties.  It is a heavy, dense wood and it is also quite strong.  All characteristics that you would like for a piece of furniture.  It has a beautiful grain and takes well to having relatively intricate details carved into it.  If you have ever cut wood from different types of trees, it is hard to miss the sturdiness compared to softer woods like pine.  If you decide to look for solid oak bedroom furniture or any other type of oak furniture, be certain that you are getting what you pay for.  Solid oak is heavier than oak veneer, which is other types of wood with an oak finish on the outside.  These can still look pretty nice, and if you are working on a tighter budget, getting furniture with just an oak finish might be an affordable option that you will want to consider.

Actually, when we started looking, I expected the prices of oak bedroom furniture to be pretty expensive.  I was surprised to find that they actually compared well with similar pine bedroom furniture.  If you are in a position like we were of not having a whole lot of money to work with, you might want to consider looking for used furniture or for unfinished oak furniture as an alternative.  It is up to you and your budget but I figure that bedroom furniture is one of those things that most people intend to hold on to for a while.  We only recently got rid of the old bed that had been my brother's and then mine.  It was originally purchased back in the 1950s and was still in fine condition.  If you buy quality, its durability can pay for itself many times over as the years go by.

What is the Best Cheap Mattress?

Everyone has their own feelings and preferences about what the perfect mattress is.  Some people like a firm mattress, while some like to fall into a soft mattress that engulfs them as they sleep.  For every person who loves sleeping on a water bed, there is at least one other person walking around like a bent stick who swears they will never go near one again.  It can be tough to choose the best mattress, and if you have a sleeping partner, things get even more complicated.  Add the cost of a mattress to the mix, and it is pretty easy to get confused about how to make the best choice.

I've been doing some research lately because the queen size mattress on my own bed was finally ready to be replaced.  It served us well for way more years than I'd like to admit, and it just wasn't springing back anymore after my wife and I got up in the morning.  A serious side effect for me was having a sore back for the first part of almost every day.  We visited mattress showrooms around where we live and I also looked online.  I've got to admit that I was a bit shocked at how expensive many of the mattresses being sold today cost.  Some looked and felt great, but they were simply out of the price range we were willing to spend.  After much consideration, I found a very nice mattress that I feel comfortable recommending.  If meets the requirement of being a relatively cheap mattress, but it also provides quality.

Most people spend somewhere in the area of one third of their lives sleeping. That's based on eight hours per day, so your mileage may vary a bit.

Even if you sleep less than that though, you still will accumulate a lot of shut eye over the course of your life and most of that time is spent on a mattress and box spring in your own bedroom. Keeping that in mind, I'd like to say that if you are looking for cheap mattresses, you should still maintain a certain standard for yourself.

The word "cheap" is really very relative here. Most people are not in a position to just go ahead and order the most expensive, top of the line mattresses available, but that doesn't mean that you should accept any serious drop offs in quality either. The price you pay in the long run with lost sleep and an aching back just is not worth it.

One good thing about buying a mattress is that you can usually find plenty of user reviews for any mattress you might be considering. If you are buying at a local mattress warehouse type of store, you may need to do a bit more research. You might be surprised to see how many mattress sets are available online. Many of them are sold with shipping included, so it ends up just being a matter of straight up comparing the prices to what you can find locally. I’m not sure about where you live, but in my area, if I want to get to one of the mega mattress stores, it involves more driving than I’m inclined to do. Anymore, I much prefer having things delivered to my door if it doesn’t cost any extra. That is one of the things I like about shopping online.

Surprisingly, even those fancy memory foam mattresses that seemed to be quite pricey for a while don’t seem all that expensive now when I check for them online. I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials for these and similar mattresses on television. Some of the more popular and reasonably priced ones are show below. The prices on mattresses can get pretty high. You've got to decide where to draw the line on price, but you've also got to put a certain value on your comfort. Just one or two sleepless nights and days spent hunched over with a sore back can make you wish that you had spent a few extra dollars for a better quality mattress.

As I have grown older, I have become more and more convinced that you usually get what you pay for in life. This isn't to say that you need to buy just the most expensive items available. It is more to say that you should consider the true value of an item before you hurry up and jump at an ultra low price tag. This applies to cheap mattresses and almost anything else you might ever want to buy for your home.

I'm updating this post because a friend of mine was checking out the site and asked me why I didn't include something about one of my favorite shelving units.  Yes, I have a favorite type of shelves for kids rooms, believe it or not.  I've had this in my house for years and it has served us well (and still is).  These shelves serve as a very handy way to teach kids to keep their things organized.  The colorful bins pull out and can be carried to wherever you need them.  I've got white shelves with pastel bins in one room and the natural wood grain shelves with primary color bins in another.  These things are great.  Another bonus is that they are available for very reasonable prices.  If you click on either of the two images shown below, you will be taken to the details page (with other reviews) on Amazon.  I've found that they have some of the best prices going on these.

Sometimes all of the books and toys in kid's rooms seem to cover every inch of the floor. It is hard to keep up with the clutter, especially if more than one child lives in the room. Having lots of good organizers that take advantage of all of the space helps provide a home for all of the miscellaneous items. Hanging up some wall shelves is a great way to put to dead space to use and to create a spot for a few trophies, favorite toys or other kid things that need a permanent spot in the room.

White wall shelves will match almost any other color and decor. They will brighten up the room and help make it look neater and more organized. White shelves look nice in a baby's room, a toddler's room and even in a teenager's room so they may last through the different stages of redecorating. And if you did want to change the color some day, it will be a simple task to paint over the white or even add a design such as big dots or a stripe.

To be honest, a lot of shelves are pretty much alike.  I like looking for shelves that make a statement, or are just a little bit "different".  It seems to me that there is no reason to keep wall space boring.  The walls are often the forgotten part of a room's design.  That's a real shame, because they take up so much interior design real estate.  One of my favorite shelving units is shown at the left.  It is a deluxe four level floating shelf.  It is shown here in white, but it is also available in a bunch of other finishes.  You can see all of the color options HERE.  It is a simple design made up of hardwood shelving pieces, but it is so much more interesting than the typical single shelves that most people end up using.  It actually makes the wall space look GOOD.  It doesn't look like an afterthought.

When my two daughters were still quite young, we decided we would let them choose the color to paint their room. That may or may not have been wise, but they chose a very bright fuchsia color that really didn't seem to have any matching colors, at least not to us. We found that going with white accessories like the cube shelves shown here along with some white furniture worked well to tone things down just a bit. We still have that brilliantly blinding fuchsia on the walls, and I'm sure it will take some work when they want to change it, but the white furnishings are working well with it.

There are dozens of white wall shelves to choose from in home stores, discount stores and online. You can find simple floating shelves or shelves that come with brackets for support. Make sure that the hardware you use to attach your shelf is made for the amount of weight you plan to put on it.

Think about how your child will probably use the shelf to judge what height would be the best for installing the unit. Will it be a spot to store trophies and better off out of the way? Or is it a shelf that should be within easy reach so your child can easily put his or her favorite toys back on when picking up?

Wall units made up of several shelves are ideal when you have a lot of stuff to store or display. Wall cubes are also a fun way to decorate a wall in a kid's room. Get your child involved in the process of choosing where to hang up the shelves or cubes and what to display in them. They will probably change their mind many times, but that will be half the fun!

If you have been looking for some type of seating that is practical and still fun, you might want to take a look at some of the great saucer chairs that are available today.  If you are searching for them online, you might also want to check the term "moon chairs", as they are sometimes used interchangeably.

If there are two things that kids love to do, they are to play and then relax.  Kids play hard, but after that, they need to sit down and rest for a while.  While they can always sit on the ground or a little wooden chair or something, these aren’t always the most comfortable choices.  If you really want to get a chair for your kid, I really suggest choosing one of the saucer chairs.  This type of chair is special for a number of reasons which we will discuss below.

You might be wondering if they are safe.  While some parents report that their child falls out of their chair easily, or it tips over, the truth is that this will happen with pretty much any type of chair.  You will need to supervise your child when he is in the chair, and if he stands up, there is a good chance it will tip over.  Nonetheless, if your child just sits in it and reads a book or takes a nap, there is a very little chance of it tipping over.

Whether you are looking for a pink saucer chair for your little girl or a blue one for a boy, there are many of them to choose from.  Most of the chairs made specifically for kids come with pictures of popular television characters on them.  Whether your kid loves princesses or star wars, there is a saucer chair that he or she will like.

For the grown ups in the family, there are many different adult saucer chairs to choose from on sites like Amazon.  If you are thinking about buying more than one of these chairs for your family, you may actually want to skip buying the child size altogether.  This is only because many people find that the larger, adult size is big enough that their little ones can almost use them as a bed when they are relaxing or watching TV!

Some things to look for when considering the purchase of a saucer chair include:

- What the frame is made of (usually metal or plastic).

- What type of fabric is used both as a filler and as an outer material.  If you have a child who tends to spill a lot, you might want to avoid anything "fuzzy".  Many of the most popular saucer chairs are covered in a luxuriously soft corduroy.

- How big the chair itself is compared to the person who will be sitting in it.

A wardrobe armoire is one of the nicest and most elegant - not to mention convenient - methods of storing ones wardrobe. However, a good armoire is not a cheap armoire. Or is it?

The closet space at top stands behind two double doors, which open into a space with a shelf that's adjustable as well as the standard closet rod for hanging your wardrobe.

This armoire weighs about 130 pounds and is marketed as t just both a wardrobe armoire, but also as a cabinet for storage or even an entertainment armoire, as it's big and sturdy enough to hold a TV and many DVD's or gaming systems.

As you can see, spending money on an armoire doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg! While most wardrobe closet furniture is high priced, there are some nice items at the lower end of the scale that provide an acceptable level of quality. Please note that because of availability over time, the items shown may not match what is mentioned in the original post. While you are considering storage options and ways to display things tastefully in your home, don't assume that everything has to be complicated and/or expensive. Sometimes some thoughtfully placed, simple white shelves can be used to display items that are dear to you and reduce the clutter that sometimes occurs across every flat surface in a room.

I'd like to share a personal side note that may be relevant to some of the people reading this entry. When my first child was on the way, my in-laws were kind enough to purchase an armoire for the nursery. It came unassembled and with directions that were in a foreign language. I think it was Chinese. Thank goodness there were diagrams drawn in the instructions as well! My personal advice to anyone taking on such an assembly project is to make sure that you have a helper available. It isn't that the job is all that difficult, but trying to hold things in place while aligning screws and such is about a thousand times easier if you have an extra pair of hands around. I also suggest laying out everything and picturing how it will function once the project is done. It can save you a lot of time.

It would be great to be able to go ahead and remodel the entire kitchen whenever you felt like it, but that can be a pretty expensive endeavor. Getting new cabinet backplates is one way to freshen up the look and feel of kitchen cabinets without getting into any major expenses.

If you are considering installing a home bar, a primary amenity to consider is a quality bar fridge. While a wet bar, or a bar with running water, is nice, a bar fridge is virtually a necessity for a well-outfitted home bar, and it involves not nearly as much accommodation, or in most cases, expense.

Bar fridges can be known by other names, probably most commonly dorm fridges. In the context of home use, these are typically of a basic size of about 120 liters in volume. These units stand about three feet high by two feet square, although there may be some slight variations among the products of different manufacturers.

If you are looking for specific, recommended models, a good place to start is with units that have received multiple excellent reviews.  The mini-fridge shown at the left is just that.  This is the Sunpentown Double Door refrigerator.  It received four and a half out of a possible five stars on Amazon for its great blend of looks, performance and capacity.  This is large enough to be more than just a drink refrigerator if you need it to be.  With a capacity of 3 and 1/5 cubic feet, it is much roomier than smaller dorm fridge units.  The double door design also allows the freezer section to act like a freezer.  Personally, when I've had single door units that featured a freezer, they always seemed to be covered in ice.  I didn't enjoy the defrosting process, so that definitely stands out in my mind.  Anyway, if you are looking for a good fridge to check out, this is it.

Another option for those who don't expect to have any great need for refrigeration at their home bar, or for whom space is a major concern is the mini-bar fridge. These typically have a volume of less than half a standard bar fridge and are proportionally smaller.

If you intend to do serious entertaining and require a lot of refrigerator space, you can use multiple bar fridges or consider going to a commercial refrigeration unit. These can be found in a great range of sizes and styles and can be quite expensive. However, such are beyond the scope of this article other than to mention that they exist. For serious football fans, there is something very special to consider. I didn't even realize that these existed until I came across them by accident, but you have got to check out the NFL refrigerators. These are a bit pricier than other standard fridges, but they will look great if you are the one who hosts football related gatherings. They are available featuring a variety of teams and would make an outstanding present for someone who seems to have everything!

An important consideration in choosing your bar fridge is to make up your mind how you intend to use it. Will you be stashing a couple of six packs and a couple of bottles of mixers? Do you intend to use it for wine, whether for its short or long term storage? Are you going to rely on the fridge to keep up with the demand for ice throughout the term of your entertaining? All of these matters and more need to be thought out in advance.

A bar fridge doesn't have a lot of capacity, so you'll be limited in what you can store there and have available for the party (the exception is the back bar fridges mentioned above). They don't really deal well with two liter bottles, although they can take several. A good idea would be to actually go out and look at some sample bar fridges and imagine that you are entertaining with the one you're looking at.

If you're expecting to have your bar fridge keep up with the demand for ice during your party you are likely to be disappointed. While there are variations in freezer space, no bar fridge is really intended to serve as an ice machine.

Some makers produce bar freezers that are typically about two-thirds the capacity of a bar fridge. While even these can hardly be expected to crank out fresh ice at a rate to match consumption, at least they can keep significant supplies of ice on hand, and they can be used for storing particular frozen items that you'd like to have near at hand as you entertain.

For people who expect to serve chilled wine at their functions or who would like to keep a supply of chilled wine ready for use, there are available specialty wine fridges. These tend to be rather more complex than a standard bar fridge. They can have separate temperature zones for different kinds of wines. They can have racks intended to keep the bottles at the desired angle. Sophisticated wine buffs also consider the humidity at which their bottles are stored to be important, so dedicated wine fridges can also have humidity controls. Of course, all this sophistication comes at a price, and you should expect a wine fridge to cost significantly more.

No discussion of bar fridges would be complete without some mention of keg fridges. These units are dedicated to the storage and temperature maintenance of beer in keg, or metal barrels. These feature beer dispensing hardware to allow for beer to be served via a tap without having to open the unit. Again, these units tend to be rather pricey due to the additional hardware they incorporate.

If you are considering adding a bar fridge to your entertainment location, give some thought to its placement. Beyond the obvious need for an electrical supply, its best to allow for some air circulation around the back of the unit to permit efficient operation. Also, if you have the option, consider mounting your bar fridge where it will be at about chest level. Many people fail to take account of the fact that these units are short, and accessing items from them, especially from at or near the bottom, can demand a lot of bending, stooping and reaching.

Take some time and plan ahead for your bar fridge and it will be a great convenience and add a lot to your entertaining.

Here is an interesting idea. How about a refrigerator that brings your drinks to you? I came across this video of a robotic refrigerator and thought I'd share. Maybe we should watch for it going on sale some time in the future!

My kids are in prime "sleepover at a friend's house" age.  They get a real kick out of being able to stay up a little bit later to watch a movie or two, while they eat huge amounts of popcorn and other assorted treats.  We love letting the kids have friends over, but we just weren't equipped to offer overnight accommodations to visiting guests.  We do have a pull out sofa bed, but, having tried it once, I didn't feel right forcing anyone to sleep on it.  It's pretty uncomfortable.  We thought about it and decided that it might be a good idea to get an air mattress.  When they're deflated, they don't take up much space, and when they are blown up, they're actually pretty comfortable.

Inflatable mattresses have one thing in common- they rely on compressed air as a means of support. Beyond that, there are some differences that you will notice as you start looking around for deals on these handy home accessories. There are enough of these mattresses to choose from that picking the right one can be confusing.

As I was researching air beds and inflatable mattresses, I was surprised by the sheer number of them. I also found that there were some that clearly stood out from the rest. This was due to their superior comfort as well as their reliability. There is really no sense in buying one of these mattresses if they are not built to handle normal use. As a practical matter, an important first consideration is the strength of the material used to construct the mattress. If you have a cat who likes to sharpen its claws or 'knead' a resting place with its paws, maybe an inflatable mattress isn't for you. Short of that, however, consider the anticipated uses and users of the product. is it likely to encounter anything more abrasive than the family room carpet? If so, make sure to assess the weight and durability of the mattress at the very outset. Is it likely to be used as a trampoline by the kiddos? They can be operated by hand or foot, but they do require exertion that you may not want to engage in when what you really want is to lay down and rest. Electric pumps are also available, and do a fine job until the power is out. If you go that route, at least make sure you have a back-up system. Battery operated pumps can be excellent for back up or routine use. With the advances in battery technology in recent years, they can be your most reliable option.

Don't forget to consider how long it will take you to deflate your inflatable mattress. Some require that you roll around on it or physically roll it up to force the air out of the deficient exhaust valves. If you intend to do this many times, you'll be glad you looked into the matter.

Although inflatable air mattresses are not terribly expensive, it's definitely worth the time and effort consider your wants and needs and to do some research. Don't be shy about asking questions and examining the goods before plunking down your cash.
