I strongly suspect that women have different perspectives from men when it comes to closets. For the most part, men do not give much attention as to how their closets look  as long as they have enough closet spaces to ram their clothing into.  I think women spend a lot more time considering the best ways to maximize closet space.

In the never-ending quest for style, integrated appliances have become quite a sensation. My first experience of such a thing was seeing my cousin's integrated refrigerator, or more accurately, not seeing it.

I arrived at her house with a salad for a family gathering, and she greeted me at the door and told me I could put the salad in the refrigerator. I went into the kitchen and discovered that there was no refrigerator in sight! She arrived a moment later and laughed as she pulled open what I had taken for a closet pantry and revealed it to be the fridge.

Nowadays, the latest rage is the integrated washing machine. As with my cousin's refrigerator, an integrated washing machine is designed to hide among the kitchen cabinetry, presenting a chic, seamless look and concealing it workaday nature. Integrated washing machines, or any other integrated appliance, are to be distinguished from free-standing units.

The key to an integrated washing machine is that it is specially designed to allow for the fitting of a veneer type of fascia that matches the cabinetry and moldings found in the rest of the room. They are also made so as to allow them to blend in with standard cabinetry dimensions of height, width and depth. A particular consideration for an integrated washing machine is that allowance must be made for the supply and drain plumbing.

Integrated washing machines typically are of a front-loading design, although top loaders can be found. This is a good thing in terms of the unit's operating efficiency, as front-loaders use less water than do free standing ones. If a unit is top-loading, of course, accommodation must be made in the countertop to allow access.

There is a price to be paid for the style of having an integrated unit. They are necessarily smaller than free standing ones, which means that more loads will have to be done in order to wash an equal amount of clothing.

On the plus side, an integrated washing machine will introduce less noise into the living area than a free standing unit. This is because it is effectively built into the cabinetry which will absorb a good deal of the noise it makes. Also, integrated washing machines are insulated and provision is made for ventilation of the motor, all of which tends to keep them quieter than their free-standing counterparts.

If you like the idea of an integrated washing machine and are prepared to pay the premium in price demanded for them, there are a few other things to keep in mind. If you wish to install the unit in an existing space, it's absolutely critical to measure carefully and be certain that the one you desire will fit in. One thing that buyers sometimes neglect to consider is that the doors on adjoining cabinets must be able to open, if not completely, at least enough to grant access to their contents. In this regard, account must be taken of the fascia to be installed on the integrated washer.

Before taking the plunge and having your new washing machine delivered, it would be wise to check and be certain that the plumbing connections are compatible with the existing plumbing. If there is no existing plumbing and you don't intend to do the installation of it yourself, be sure to consult a plumber to get an idea of the feasibility of doing so and the cost. Depending on the layout of your home, you could be in line for a bit of a rude shock.

While it may seem too elementary to be missed, don't forget to allow for a supply of electricity! While it's not usually a serious problem, if you live in an older home with its electrical system operating at or near capacity, the sudden surges of power demanded by any washing machine can cause breakers to trip, so be sure your chosen circuit is up to the challenge.

In the least complicated of possible worlds, an integrated washing machine is best installed as part of an overall kitchen remodeling. In such a case, the desirability of a particular location from a work efficiency perspective can be accounted for, as well as the plumbing and electrical power supply issues.

A well thought out installation of an integrated washing machine can really enhance the appearance of your kitchen. However, there's more to it than is required for a free standing unit installation if you want to avoid costly and embarrassing mistakes.

In times gone by, indoor rugs were indoor rugs and outdoor rugs were outdoor rugs. That distinction has become blurred as time has gone by owing to the development of high quality polypropylene rugs. Polypropylene is a synthetic polymer material derived from petroleum byproducts and is also known by the trademark name Olefin. Not surprisingly, they are often marketed as 'indoor-outdoor rugs'.

Polypropylene rugs, being synthetic, tend to shrug off stains and the fading effects of sunlight better than natural fibers, and can shrug off a rain shower or hosing off without developing mold or mildew, assuming they get a reasonable chance to dry.

However, they tend to cling to greasy stains, so they probably aren't a good bet to place under your barbecue grill. Still, they can withstand the routine spills of children and tipsy guests.

They can be manufactured in a tightly looped structure that can easily be mistaken for a natural fiber, and are not the 'plasticy' braided sort of thing found at my Grandma's back door. Instead they are soft and might even be considered somewhat plush. They are available in a huge variety of styles, sizes and shapes, not to mention bright and attractive colors.

They can be found in a wide variety of motifs, as well. From southwestern styles in bright colors to a Persian look in more muted tones, not to mention solids, your imagination is probably the limit as to what you can find. A trip to some local carpeting stores or home centers will give you a broad selection. If you don't find just what you want in those venues, a trip on the internet will amaze you with the possibilities.

For outdoor use, they are typically found as area rugs, and in this mode they are easily picked up and machine washed. They can endure many washings and still look as good as new. They are of a substantial weight, however, and you might want to consider taking them for a wash in the big, heavy duty washing machine at the laundromat.

However, for day to day spills, they can be cleaned up with the application of some soap and water with a soft brush, rinsed off with a garden hose and left to air dry. An area rug is also easily rolled up and taken indoors for the winter. For all its gleaming whiteness, snow manages to pick up a good deal of grime, and as it melts that grime will be left to soak into your rug. No point in subjecting it to avoidable hazards, is there?

All of the qualities listed above make them desirable for those areas of the home where dirt and spills are to be expected; say entry ways and the kitchen in particular. However, they aren't as soft or 'cozy' as wool, for example. Unless you have chronic spillers roaming in your living room or family room, you probably will want to go with some other fiber.

For outdoors or indoors, or in a transition area such as a foyer, polypropylene rugs have much to commend them.

There are many who believe that all matters of style are cyclical, and that which is popular at a given time will pass out of style and ultimately come around again. However true that may be as a general proposition, it is certainly true of metal kitchen cabinets.

Very popular items, particularly in the era of the 1940's and 1950's, these vintage metal kitchen cabinets fell out of favor in later decades. Now, however, there is a resurgence of interest in them.

Their original appeal was due to their low cost and easy maintenance, plus the fact that they were then new and exciting. Well, after their decline, they remain easy to maintain, and to many, are again new and exciting.

Prices, as with most things, will vary widely. Some people just want to have them removed and will practically (or actually!) give them away in return for having them dismounted and hauled. Some people, however, especially if their cabinets are in superior condition, may seek up to several thousand dollars for a substantial set.

Also, be aware that the condition of cabinets even among an installed set may vary widely, and it's not uncommon to have to acquire several sets and 'cut and paste' them to accommodate variances in condition. Finally, going this route is a far cry from ordering custom cabinets. The cabinets are the size that they are, and are not easily or practically trimmed. Making them fit into an inflexible space may prove to be a great chore.

Of course, the renewal of interest in metal kitchen cabinets has not gone unnoticed by modern cabinet manufacturers. There are newly designed metal cabinets on the marketplace, and they reflect the advancements in technology that have occurred over time. Today, finishes are less likely to be permanently damaged by scratches and impacts, and corrosion resistance is much better. They are available in more colors and can include features such as custom hardware and even glass inserts.

Whether old and recycled or new, metal kitchen cabinets are easy to keep clean and maintain. They may be just the thing for those weary of seeing cabinets in more or less well rendered wood (real or faux) or Formica finishes.

When it comes to buying curtains and  considering different curtain styles, one of the most economical window treatments you will find are eyelet curtains.  There are many different styles available both online and at local retail shops.  I like to look online at sites like Amazon for eyelet curtains simply because they are such a simple product, that Amazon seems to be able to offer really good deals on them.  Here are a few of their more popular draperies and curtains...

When most people think of curtains and draperies, the tendency is to associate draperies with heavier fabrics and being of floor length. They also, in most people's minds, tend to be hung from drapery hooks and pulled back and forth by means of a drapery rod, with sliding eyelets on the rod for the drapery hooks. Their construction tends to be complex, particularly regarding the mounting system.

Curtains, on the other hand, in most minds, are typically of a lighter construction, although lined curtains are also quite popular today. In other cases, the eyelet itself may be of a larger diameter and allow for the passage of the rod right through the fabric.  I like using the curtains without rings and simple curtain fabrics in my bathroom and kitchen area.  I find that some simple white eyelet curtains in both of these rooms work very well.  They are very simple to hang up, and more and more I have found myself preferring curtain styles without rings or hard to work with layers.  It isn't so much that I don't want to bother with them, but some nice cheap curtains work just fine for me and I don't have to worry too much about  them getting damaged because eyelet curtains really don't cost all that much.

In any case, the eyelet curtains are designed to be of such a width that the mounting of the curtain to the rod allows for a natural, graceful pleating of the curtain material. A shower curtain is a common example of an eyelet curtain.

One aspect of the popularity of eyelet curtains is the fact that they lend themselves to being homemade. They are of rather simple construction and are not too intimidating for even beginning sewers. Curtain tape is available as a means of reinforcing the eyelets. It is a strip of sturdy material sewn at the top of the curtain on the back side which is resistant to tearing or other damage, and allows even sheer fabrics to be used as curtains.

Naturally, homemade curtains allow for the greatest range of variety in seeking a particular look. Ready made curtains bought straight off the shelf are most convenient, but one is limited to the offerings of any particular dealer or the number of dealers one is willing to visit. Of course, with the popularity of the internet, it's possible to buy curtains online in a huge assortment of styles, colors and sizes.

Another option when one wants to buy curtains is made to measure curtains. In this case the buyer provides careful measurements of the opening or area desired to be covered. He or she will also select the fabric to be used. If one is dealing locally, it's possible to examine the material before assembly begins so there are no surprises later.

This is generally the most expensive option, but is almost sure to yield a happy result. In fact, when buying locally, the customer may simply have the provider come out and measure the designated openings and bring along samples of fabric or use material supplied by the buyer. In that case, it's rare for there to be a disappointment when you choose eyelet curtains for your home.
