Everyone would love to live in a luxurious estate filled with every modern convenience, with no concern at all for how much things cost.  The reality though, is that not everyone can afford to take on an expensive mortgage.  Plenty of people are looking for cheap homes that they can afford.  It doesn't do you much good to buy a property that puts you in debt over your head.

Every year there are very detailed lists of cheap cities to live in released by a variety of publications.  Why are they so cheap?  Well, it might be that the economy in that area is a bit more flat than in other areas.  There are places really struggling right now.  Businesses shut down and people leave.  If you can find a place like this that is on the road to recovery, you might be able to grab a great deal on a home front.  Be careful though.  You really only want to buy a cheap home in an area like this that is on its way back up.  The last thing you want to do is a buy your own little piece of what will soon be a ghost town.  If it seems that everyone is looking to get out of Dodge and there are no recovery plans in effect, keep moving.


I recently was reading doing a bit of research on inexpensive places to live and was a bit surprised to see Pittsburgh, PA on the list.  This is a great example of some interesting factors coming into play.  We all know that Pittsburgh was a huge industrial center.  Steel was king.  For many years, people made their livings in the steel industry.  From the common workers up to the bosses who ran the mills, people got their money from the steel mills.  When the mills closed, the city hit some hard times.  Although not perfect now, the city has made huge strides toward recovery.  Medical, educational and technology centers have come to the forefront in the city.  Much of the world though, still thinks of Pittsburgh as purely a blue collar town.

Another important factor at play in the case of Pittsburgh, is the aging population.  There is a high percentage of residents who fall into the senior category.  As these people pass on or move out of their homes, there are many vacant homes to be sold.  With few people moving into the area, prices for housing can be surprisingly cheap compared to other areas of the United States.  You can find cheap homes in many areas of the city.  Of course not all areas are equally desirable, but it is an interesting situation to look in to for people looking to find cheap homes for sale in a nice area. There are other areas with similar housing situations, you just have to look around for the right conditions coming together.  You might be able to find cheap homes for sale or cheap rental homes at the very least.
