Most people are often at a loss when it comes to making sure that their lawn and garden are both ready for the winter frost. Well, here’s a tip. It’s good to start early. If you wish to retain the cheery colors that your garden sported all through spring and summer, you would need to start your preparations long before the temperature drops. The leaves from your summer annuals would make a great foundation for your compost pile. But before you start collecting any, you would have to make sure that these leaves are free of any disease that they might transfer onto your plants.
Remember to mix in dead flowers, grass clippings as well as various other biodegradable table scraps into your compost to make sure that it has all the nutrients that your plants would require during the winter. Turn your compost pile with a lawn rake every now and then. Also, keep the pile moist. Your grass would also need to be mowed continuously until winter arrives. If you let them grow out before the first snow arrives, you are almost certainly going to have a pretty bad bout with snow mold when springtime comes. So keep your lawn grass mowed all the time.
If you have a vegetable garden, you would need to pay it extra attention. Make sure to be patient enough and wait to harvest the late bloomers such as cabbage and broccoli. You might also need to wait for beets and carrots that were planted late in the summer. Just keep on doing all the above steps up until the first sign of snow arrives. When the first snow arrives, both your grass and garden would be ready to go through the chilly winter months and you’ll surely be rewarded with an exquisitely healthy and fertile lawn and garden come springtime.
