Now that the weather starting to get cold outside, I have found myself more time to think about some things. At this time of year, I always start thinking about spending the holidays with my family and that gets me through weather turning thoroughly cruddy. Once the holidays pass however, the dark days of winter start driving my imagination to look for an escape. Usually, I start thinking about where I'd like to go on vacation with my family during the summer months.
Most years, I start thinking about going to the beach. This year though, I started pondering vacations earlier than usual and I am thinking about doing something totally different. Whether or not I am able to swing it financially remains to be seen, but I have some things in the works that I hope will allow us to take a new and different type of vacation.
I don't watch much television, but when I do, I really like watching shows about traveling. One place that has always captured my imagination, and that goes against the grain of every vacation I have ever taken, is our largest state, Alaska. I am always struck by the sheer beauty and wide open spaces of one of our world's last frontiers. Just for fun, I have started investigating Alaska fishing lodges as a possibility for a family vacation. I always loved fishing before I got married and the kids started coming. It is a hobby that I'd love to get back into sooner rather than later. I was actually surprised to find that the prices were more reasonable than I ever would have expected. Of course, I would have to get the idea approved by my beach loving wife and children, but I think it would be a really great time.
I've always enjoyed the peacefulness of fishing and from what I've seen on TV and the Internet, it looks like they have got some amazing fishing up there. I'm also pretty sure that the weather isn't too terribly inhospitable during the summer months. Yep. I don't know that it will be this year, but I am definitely adding Alaska to my "places to see" list.
