I Love the Simple Design of Cube Shelving and Storage Cubes
Storage cubes and cube shelves are among the simplest of concepts. While today they are found in a tremendous range of styles, basically they are boxes laid on their sides and stacked. What could be simpler?
Home Storage Cubes
Here are three examples of helpful organizing tools for your home that don't cost a lot. The first is a stackable shelving unit that has a very modern look. Kids would probably love the bright colors! Next, is a handy storage are for shoes. People can walk in the door, and park their shoes in the convenient little cubby holes. This can quickly solve the problem of tripping over shoes that people have carelessly kicked off as they enter your home. Finally, the last item shown here is one of the fabric drawers that I mentioned. They're great for getting little ones to clean up because they can walk around the room with the actual drawer and fill it with their toys, dolls, games, or whatever you want them to put away!

Modular Shelving Units
Some people refer to cube shelving as modular shelving units. Whatever they may be called, the function is substantially the same. Storage that looks good doing its job. Stackable storage is not an entirely new idea, but there are now more options than ever before. They allow homeowners to find colorful furniture for kids' & teen rooms that look more modern than traditional storage trunks or storage benches.
As I was exploring the online world for the most popular storage cubes and cube shelving units, I came across something that doesn't quite qualify as a "cube" unit, but I just loved the way it looked. The image at left (clickable) shows the 4D Concepts Corner Spacesaver Bookcase. This is something I wish I had owned when I was living in an apartment. It is such an attractive way to make use of what is usually just dead space. Storage and shelving can go hand in hand, and it doesn't have to create a cluttered appearance. This shelving unit is also made of composite board, but it has a maple finish. It has pre-drilled holes for mounting to the wall. I know it isn't a cube shelving unit, but if you are looking for storage options, it is both attractive, and affordable.
If you're considering getting yourself some shelving cube unit, it's best to give some careful thought to just what it is that you want to store and how accessible you want the stored items to be. You should definitely consider the size of the items to be stored, and how you might best organize various types of items to make some sort of logical arrangement in the most efficient manner. The more cramped for space you are, the more efficiently you will want to arrange your items. If you have a ton of small items that you want to display, you may need to invest in more than one piece of furniture or you will run the risk of creating a very cluttered display that is also a nightmare to dust and keep looking good.
One thing that many people find especially well-suited to storage in cube shelving is shoes. You can find shelving cubes designed especially for this application, so there's no need to buy large cubes and then end up tossing your shoes in on top of one another. Make the effort to find units made specifically for shoe storage and you can keep them in their own cubbies, without risk of scuffing them up. You can also find these storage cubes made specifically to act as components of an overall closet storage system. Usually this helps in making sure that the cubes take up the least amount of space needed to do the job.
How to Use Cube Shelving
Consider whether you want the cube shelves to be primarily for storage or display, or a combination of both. In small living areas, you might find yourself having to keep items 'on display' as a means of simply storing them. The more utilitarian your storage goals, the lower in cost you can find acceptable units. Some people simply go to the liquor store and get free cardboard boxes in suitable sizes and stack them in their basement or garage to keep items that they don't feel an urge to display. That may be a bit far down the path to being strictly functional for some people, but you get the idea. There is no sense in paying extra for looks if absolutely no one is going to see the cubes.
Of course, many people will want their cube shelves to be an integral part of their decor, and there is no shortage of options available for such persons! Cube shelving can be found in just about any imaginable material. From plastic to wire to wood to leather, if you spend some time looking, you can find what your creativity demands.
One thing about cube shelving that some people don't take account of until it's too late is whether or not your storage needs will indicate that the units should be fastened to the wall. If you expect to store heavy items above floor level, you would do well to consider securing the shelves, especially if you have youngsters roaming the premises.
If you have a cat, you can expect it to make its way to the highest point it can reach and lounge there. Consider if this will present a risk of having your stacked cubes tumble to the floor as a result of the cat's adventuring.
A little forethought will allow you to design a functional and attractive means of storing and or displaying your possessions. A little extra will allow you to do so with safety. Personally, I really like these pieces of furniture. Now that I've found storage cubes and cube shelving, I'm sure I'll continue to find new uses for them every time I feel like reorganizing a bit.
