Refinishing the Garage Floor

Tags: , ,

A garage can be a place to that you bring your ideas to life, your little building playpen with all your tools of trade hanging on the wall in there special place. You put up pegboard with hooks so you can keep a variety of spare parts around for that quick emergency repair. But what most people don't bother with or never think about is the garage floor.

Giving your garage floor a nice epoxy finish can really brighten up your little corner of the world. With many different colors and textures on the market today you are sure to find just the one for you. A garage floor coating is like anything else "you get what you pay for". Cheaper brands are vulnerable to wear and chemicals. Some can break down with the heat from your tires leaving you peel marks. A good epoxy can last up to 15 years when properly applied depending on use.

Careful preparation must be taken to prepare the floor for the epoxy coating. The garage floor must be free from moisture, chemicals and dirt. Moisture is probably the biggest reason for adhesion failure causing separation between the garage floor and the epoxy coating. After washing the floor it can take weeks for the concrete to dry enough to apply the coating. With newly poured floors it is recommended that you wait at least a month or more before applying a epoxy coating.

Garage floor epoxy comes in two part kits, one can is a resin one can is a hardner. The two components are mixed together according to the manufactures instructions and applied to the garage floor usually with a roller. The floor can usually be walked on in about 24 hours and fully cures in a few days. Once fully cured you will have a rock solid coating that will last for years.
