An electronic furnace air filter, also commonly referred to as an electrostatic filter, are definitely worth their money, especially if you or someone in your home is troubled with allergenic type health problems.   Originally, the primary job of furnace filters was to protect your heating system by keeping it clean and free from dirt and dust that would clog it up.  Nowadays electronic furnace air filters also do a great job at filtering out up to 90% of dust, pollen, and even bacteria and molds from the air in your home.

There is a wide range of electronic furnace filters available on the market these days, though some brands are better known and seem to generally perform better when reviewed by consumers.  It is not necessarily true, however, that cheaper is better when it comes to the electronic furnace filter as you can find many in the low price range spectrum that perform just as well as the more expensive filters.

Something that is also a real saving with an electronic furnace air filter is that they are considered more permanent, with some having a lifetime guarantee, others up to a ten-year guarantee.  All that is needed to keep them functioning well is cleaning. Once a month, especially during the winter months when your heating system will be getting the most use, simply take the filter outside and clean it, dry it off then slip it back into place.

These newer filters act on the principle of static electricity. Most do not need to be connected to any power source in order to produce static electricity, however there are a few models that do need to be powered up in order to polarize the filter.

The main thing to remember when using an electronic furnace filter is that it does require regular cleaning. Failure to do so will not only mean that you are not benefiting from the health benefits offered but also you could actually end up damaging your heating system if you allow the filter to get too clogged up.
