Writing desks are by no means a new invention, in fact this classic piece of furniture has been in existence in one form or another for centuries. Perhaps because of their usability and practicality, the writing desk remains an important piece of furniture, one which most homes possess.

Writing desks are very practical. They are smaller than regular sized desks thus can easily fit into a bedroom or a home office, or even in the corner of a living room. They have drawers where pen and paper can be stored and they are usually also a nicely crafted piece of furniture thus do not look out of place no matter where they are situated.

In some respects the actual style of the writing desk has differed little from those made in the 1800’s.  In fact, many modern made desks are replicas of these antique desks. One exception is that some writing desks also include a shelf for a keyboard, although it should be noted that there is not really enough room for a desktop computer on a writing desk. Laptops fit just fine though.

Traditionally a writing desk will have several small drawers, usually placed at the front of the desk. Some have removable hutches with either drawer space or pigeon holes to provide extra storage space. They are often designed with style in mind and thus, rather than having the rather angular design that modern desks have, they are often very delicately designed, some with patterns carved into them and carved legs.

Of course, not all writing desks are made from wood. Modern designs include desks made from hard plastic, or desks with wooden desktop and a metal framing or metal legs. Many modern desk also have a means to adjust the height of the desk, making it perfect for someone who does use their laptop and keyboard at their writing desk.

Prices vary greatly depending on what style of desk you are buying and the quality of the piece of furniture. Some can be bought for as little as $80 while other contemporary designed desks can cost up to $700 or more.  Prices for antiques vary greatly, depending on exactly how old the desk is and what condition it is in.
