Behind every philanthropic institution is a founding story, and Colcom Foundation‘s begins with a woman who saw environmental crisis coming long before most were paying attention. Cordelia S. May created the foundation in 1996 after decades of personal commitment to ecological sustainability and population awareness. Her work offers a case study in how individual foresight can shape lasting institutional change.
Decades of Dedication Before the Foundation Existed
By 1952, when May was just 23 years old, she was already channeling her charitable interests toward family planning. Her motivation was straightforward: she respected the beauty and balance of nature and understood that the natural world’s delicate equilibrium had been compromised. She saw population growth as a slow but cumulative force with the power to overwhelm ecological systems.
That concern became a lifelong passion. When May founded Colcom Foundation at age 68, it reflected more than four decades of thinking and giving on these issues. The foundation was substantially funded following her death in 2005 and continues operating today with her humanitarian goals at the center of its work.
Honoring a Visionary Philanthropist
Colcom Foundation frames its grantmaking as honoring the objectives, foresight, dignity, and compassion of its benefactor. The foundation draws a parallel between Mrs. May and other early reformers who were misunderstood in their time, noting that advocates of gender equality and civil rights were once considered heretics whose vindication would only come later. Colcom Foundation’s mission to address overpopulation’s adverse effects on natural resources stands as a continuation of that reformist tradition. Colcom Foundation’s work has also facilitated proactive environmental advocacy and protection by groups, including the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, WeConservePA, Westmoreland Land Trust, Protect PT, and Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services.
