For Justin Nelson, the journey from Tufts University to JP Morgan Private Bank has been a transformative experience—not just for him,
but for many Tufts students who followed in his footsteps. Nelson, a 1998
graduate of Tufts with a dual degree in chemistry and economics, embarked on
his career in the finance industry with an internship at JP Morgan. This
opportunity set the stage for his future success, eventually leading to his
role as Managing Director in Asset Management.
Justin Nelson’s mission has always been to bridge the gap between Tufts
students and the finance industry. In 2006, he initiated efforts to establish
Tufts as one of JP Morgan’s core recruiting schools. This designation meant
that JP Morgan would actively recruit interns and employees from the
university. Nelson’s early efforts were largely solitary; from arranging travel
plans to funding his visits, he managed it all without institutional support.
Despite the initial challenges, Nelson’s perseverance paid off. Over the years, his endeavors have
resulted in the hiring of 20 Tufts graduates by JP Morgan in various roles
within asset management. The impact of his work is best illustrated by stories
like that of Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate who secured a full-time position at JP
Morgan after an internship—a feat he attributes largely to Nelson’s guidance.
Nelson’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Today, a robust network of Tufts alumni at JP Morgan
supports his recruitment drive, participating in résumé screenings, campus
visits, and informational sessions. This network has become a crucial element
in sustaining the connection between Tufts and JP Morgan, ensuring that the
pipeline of talent remains strong.
Beyond his recruitment efforts, Justin Nelson has also
contributed to the Tufts Financial Network by sharing his industry insights at
events like the Wall Street Crash Courses. His commitment to helping Tufts
students navigate the complex world of finance reflects his dedication not only
to his alma mater but also to the broader finance community.
“The sense of giving back and helping others find their path is incredibly rewarding,”
says Nelson. His work continues to open doors for Tufts students, ensuring that
more Jumbos have the opportunity to thrive at JP Morgan.
